Not that there was any doubt, but Monique Lhuillier certainly knows how to fit a woman. It’s easy to forget that there are more successful men working as womenswear designers than women but every once in a while, we’re treated to a collection by a female designer that proves women know what other women want.
Sticking with this season’s burgeoning athletic trend, Lhuillier used intricate seaming and paneling to draw attention to the center of the body, therefore slimming the waist and hips. With a palette of cobalt, yellow, pink, black, and white, the designer added a hint of downtown edge to her usual red carpet favorites. Geometric shapes kept the color blocking from looking boring and the inset textures stole the show.
The models wore intense ponytails that were slicked back and then teased, fittingly resembling an actual horse’s tail. The collection played to Lhuillier’s strengths as we saw a lot of cocktail and eveningwear but surprising hit looks included a lace-front cardigan and a ¾ length jacket with inset leather. A splatter paint print was a pleasant surprise and the final red carpet-worthy looks included a stellar water marble printed gown and black and navy off the shoulder dress that is guaranteed to end up on the best dressed lists.
