RALPH LAUREN GOES VIRTUAL

Tom Ford has been doing interviews with everyone from Martha Stewart to Cathy Horyn of The New York Times to promote his first film “A Single Man” and one of the most memorable ones was with The Daily Beast’s Tina Brown where he spoke at length about his admiration for Ralph Lauren (who similarly has expressed a desire to get into the director’s chair). He called Lauren the world’s “first Creative Director” and singled him out as someone whom he looks up to in the industry. It truly is impressive that Ralph Lauren has continued to remain at the forefront of what is happening in the fashion industry. He is certainly young at heart (I spotted the designer at the space formerly known as the Boom Boom Room atop The Standard Hotel a few weeks ago one late Wednesday night), and surrounds himself with some of the best players in the industry.

RL was one of the first to get into the iPhone and Facebook application game, and now Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. has launched a new online venture.  In tandem with their first show for the Rugby Ralph Lauren, they are launching a virtual runway show with a “make-your-own” option that allows viewers to put together their favorite looks and see them move on actual models. This format will be extended to Lauren by Ralph Lauren and Ralph Lauren children’s wear brands next year.

It’s refreshing to see a giant like RL take such an active approach to branching out and getting with the high-tech times. Hopefully others will follow suit.
