Are you ready for some football? We know we are! Super Bowl is undoubtedly one of the biggest sporting events of the year, and whether you could give a hoot about watching the game or not (we’re not talking about you Boston or New York), chances are, you still want to look good for it. We huddled with a few real girls and fashion experts and made them spill the beans on all their game day style secrets. Um, #winning!
1. Sport A Sleek Pony
Looking hot, yet not overdone, for the Super Bowl is easy says hair extension maven/stylist Tiffany Lahn. “Pull your hair back into a sleek ponytail and add a hair band with your team colors. Or go for a chic side braid (a fishtail is my choice) weaving team colored ribbon through your locks,” she says.
2. Score A Touchdown In Colorblock
Instead of being so literal with actual “fan gear,” Style Correspondent and author Jene Luciani says she likes to see women sporting their team colors in clever ways. “Colorblocking is huge right now, so for example, a Giants fan could rock royal blue jeans with a red top. Or, take a cue from the boys and don a men’s oversized jersey but do something cute like pair it with a fitted jacket.”
3. Cinch It With A Belt!
“I’m a professional stylist here in NYC, and as a Giants fan, I’m always supporting my team,” says stylist Kerri Renae. “Since men’s football jerseys can often look like muumuus on us girls, I suggest adding a wide, solid colored elastic belt to cinch your waist and give you some curves.” Try one in a metallic silver or gold to complement your team without being too matchy-matchy, she says. “Add leggings, ankle booties, and voilà, you’ve got a look that's chic and Super Bowl appropriate.”
4. Become A “Superfan”
“You don’t have to dig into your man’s closet for an oversized jersey in order to support your team on game day,” says men’s style blogger Megan Collins of Style Girlfriend. “I always recommend Old Navy's new, super cute (and super affordable) line, Superfan Nation, to my friends and readers,” she says. “Unlike the Victoria's Secret Pink line, your team's logo isn't covered in rhinestones or sparkles, and it's considerably cheaper too!” The clothes fit great, she adds, and are actually made for “regular” people, not linebackers wearing shoulder pads.
5. Play The Fashion Field
Avid Patriots fan and fashionista Jennifer Houston recommends giving your jersey some shape with a thin belt (as opposed to a wide one) or pairing your vintage team tee with skinnies and a chic blazer. To get more of her fashionable football insight, check out her blog here.
6. Nail That Look
And by that we mean, play up your nails! Since the color schemes for both teams are pretty similar this year says wardrobe and beauty stylist Fanny Woo, Patriot fans will need to use a little more silver in their manicure. “For New York fans, paint your nails blue and then stripe them horizontally with red and white nail polish. New England fans, color your nails silver and red alternating. Then paint a white star on each nail.” If you’re feeling really spirited, says Fanny, paint your team’s logo or your favorite player’s number on one nail!
7. Just Throw It In The Bag
Whether you’re a fanatic or just plan to cheer on either the Giants or the Patriots this Super Bowl, you probably want to be seen sporting one of your team’s colors, says Lisa Rissetto, Founder and Creative Director for 49 Square Miles. “Score major style points with a fashionable, casual chic red or blue bag that will hold all your essentials and complement your enviable game day ensemble.” You can use these fab, functional accessories long after the big game she says.
8. Get Violent (Okay, NOT Literally)
“For fun, try a Violent Lips Lip Tattoo,” says makeup artist Cara J. Maccianti. “These temporary tattoos are a great way to add something exciting and special to your lips that won’t rub off when you drink beer! Choose a color from the Glitterati line or try my favorite, The American Flag,” she says. After all, nothing is more Patriotic than the Super Bowl.”
9. Kick Off In Colored Denim
Colored jeans are still a huge trend, says PR girl Ashley Schaffer, so why not choose a pair in your team’s color? “Joe’s Jeans has a great variety of colors, but you can find them at lower price points at Urban Outfitters or even Old Navy!” Plus, you’ll definitely wear them again she notes.
10. Win With A Bold Lip
“Playing with your makeup is an easy way to join in on the game day festivities,” says NY-based Account Supervisor Megan Oxland. “For those girls who wouldn’t be caught dead in a jersey, try a blue sweater with bold red lips. This will definitely give Eli Manning and Tom Brady a run for their money as star player of the day.”
