10 Milliners Every Stylist Should Know

Philip Treacy and Stephen Jones may rule the runway, but they aren’t the only big guns in millinery. If you know where to look, there are a slew of established and emerging hat designers on the scene that are making a name for themselves from Los Angeles to Japan. And we’re not just talking about the brands sold on Net-a-Porter.

On the West Coast, there are emerging milliners like Gladys Tamez, a favorite of stars like Johnny Depp and Rihanna. Her pronounced crowns fall somewhere between a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer and an English equestrian jockey. Here on the East Coast, there are designers like Ryan Wilde, a young Brooklynite who was discovered by Isabella Blow during a smoke break in the U.K. She found fame after linking up with Patricia Field and is now the director of millinery at J.J. Hat Center and Pork Pie Hatters. Her toppers have graced the pages of Vogue, decorated the windows at Henri Bendel and accessorized A-listers like Janet Jackson, and that’s just the beginning.
